As the axle plates swivel up and down do they create changes in the geometry that can cause problems?

Fig 1 shows the first design, but the trail was too small.

To get the look I'm trying for I had to move the head tube up into the plates. Is there another way to get the trail I need with a design closer to Fig 1?

Fig 2 will take some serious design to get the strength needed to pull it off.
