Custom Chopper Project Questions

I'm considering a custom chopper project for me and my 10 yr old grandson. Would like to build from scratch. What are some of the basic tools to start with in a metal shop? I have worked with wood for years, now want to start working with metal. I know that it is not the same thing. However It will be quality time with my grandson. I'm getting a good start with this site, books and DVD's.
