Factory or Pre-Made Harness!

by Jerry aka "Partner"

Great video if you are using a factory or pre-made harness, but what about us few who refuse to sub-out any of the build, including making our own wiring harness?

I once had a Harley Dealer tell me, "There is no way you can make a '49 Panhead run using only 3-4 wires"! I rode that '49 to his shop the next day, used 3 wires (for ignition only & charging system).

In 1980 after I had been in a serious crash, I wanted to mount a 1978 FX electric start on my 1948 Pan in a Trike frame (I had (2) broken legs from the crash). The Dealer Mechanic in Vancouver, WA. said "Impossible!" 2 weeks later I (with 4-5 Bros) rode the Trike, with a 1978 electric start to the Dealership. Outcome: one very embarrassed Harley Mech.

So you see there are a few of us that refuse to use pre-made if is any possibility we can do yourself. To US that is what we did in the old days before the Billet Craze. That is "True OLD SCHOOL" !

Wiring
by: Chris, Alberta

Know what you mean... 18yrs old, running a couple of wires for lights just to be on the road, thank god for mags! One year I paid over $4600.00 in fines for illegal equipment, or lack of.
Lots of talented builders out there with sharp garage skills, nothing wrong with that because that's how I started. I also learned a lot from dealerships when I had to buy parts and knowing who to talk to there. I understand there point of view of running legal equipment, even on chops. Dealerships want to be sure your ride is legal and safe, just like any auto/truck dealership.

Every now and then you get a know-it-all who ruins your day and makes an ass of them selves but one thing I learned over the years is to do it right the first time to avoid issues down the road, even on a ridged. All that matters, whether it be stock, custom, or modified is to be safe and some what legal. I am building a Triumph T-120 ridged for the thirteenth time with limited wiring. It's hard to get the righteous look without ruining it with signals and horn but with today's digital age of awesome equipment such as LED's and load equalizers, it makes it that much more fun to build.
