Yamaha Virago Custom Chopper Project

by Brian
(Moose Jaw Sk. Canada)

Hi everyone,

My bike is an '85 Yamaha 1000 Virago. I know, to many. These wanna-be customs are not too attractive, but when you strip off all the unneeded crap they don't look too bad.

My bike has had the steering head of the frame raked out, but I don't know how far (possibly 3/8" pie cut by previous owner). There is also an early 750 Honda fork, wheel and brake. The bike even has a fairly rare laced rear wheel.

The rear fender is an after market Dyna one. I shortened the rear springs to lower the rear about 2" and the fender is mounted nice and low.

I have modified the stock handle bar risers to be about 3" taller and mounted some drag bars. I made a side licence plate bracket and the tail light is one off a old dirt bike.

I have modified the rear exhaust pipe to exit out the right side above the trans not below.

So far no mufflers, no air filters and no electrics. But I hope to have her road worthy by spring. So far e-bay has been a great resource as well as web sites like this one.

The only colour is semi-gloss black.

I'll get a photo of it when I can. It actually looks not too bad.

Keep working and if it looks like it'll fit it can be made to fit.
Brian

Thanks
by: Anonymous

Hi guys
Thanks for encouraging words. Winter has yet to give up its grip on us yet, so more time to work on the bike. I'll get some photos of it as soon as I can get it out of the garage. Then you can have a look and let me know what you think.
Thanks again
B

Hi Brian,
I'm looking forward to seeing your bike. I'm working on a 83 model of 920 virago myself and its not gonna look much like a virago when I'm done. I have 2 blogs here on this site "My Tribute Bike" and "The "Jody" Tribute Bike", both about the same bike but in the but in the 2nd one you can read a little about my virago.

Again Brian, keep up the good work and I'll be looking forward to see photos of your bike.

Vice Grips and a big hammer!

Brother I can dig your philosophy.
Been a Beemer man for near 30 years but just took on an old 750 Kawi Twin project. I'm into the initial stripping and cleaning stage right now and will probably be ready to fire it up in the spring. Then it'll be time to bash some of my zillion ideas into life. Not sure what it'll eventually look like, probably some sort of cross breed between a cafe racer and a bobber but I'll eventually drop some coin for a rigid frame from Cycle One in the Queen City.
Have you seen the A.M.E. front end kits? They've got a Virago on the site, looks way cool.
